Sneaker collaborations don't just appear out of the blue, they emerge from the hands of creative individuals, each with a tale to tell. However, many tend to overlook the stories behind some of these projects.
Some of the coveted releases include the works of Hiroshi Fujiwara (creator of the fragment design x Travis Scott x Air Jordan 1), Korean streetwear label thisisneverthat, Chitose Abe's sacai, and many others. And if you didn't realise, many of these are rooted in Asian culture, which plays a significant role in the designs we see today. But how exactly?
The ethnic diversity in the sneaker community encompasses individuals all around the world. Take Yoon Ahn as an example, a Korean-American fashion designer who graduated from Boston University but is now based in Japan.
After bringing us the AMBUSH x Nike Dunk High, which pulls inspiration from Japanese biker gangs in the 1950s, Ahn continued to work with the American sportswear brand to revive archived silhouettes like the 1996 Air Adjust Force basketball shoes. To this day, Ahn continues to make waves as one of the best Asian sneaker designers, breaking stereotypes around the careers of Asian youth.
Lifestyle brand CLOT, owned by Edison Chen and Kevin Poon, also show that introducing Asian sneaker collaborations to the masses shows an effort of bridging the gap between Eastern and Western culture.
The Clot x Air Jordan 5 Low "Black", for example, elevates Michael Jordan's AJ5 basketball sneakers (originally inspired by American fighter jets) with Chinese influences like the jade lace knots and eye stays, bold red accents, and the Chinese characters for Michael Jordan’s jersey number "23" (二三) embroidered at the heel.
And not only do these collaborations put a spotlight on Asian creatives, but they also captivate people of all ages to something relatable like the Hello Kitty x Nike Air Presto, paying homage to the fictional British cartoon character Hello Kitty created by the Japanese company Sanrio.
Nike has delivered a range of Asian-inspired shoes over the years, through collaborations and in-line offerings, and we do not doubt that there are many more on the way.
