Beyoncé Knowles has been a household name since she rose to fame in the early '90s. From 'Single Ladies' to 'Crazy In Love', you'd be hard pressed to find an artist with as many hits as Queen B. Not only is she a singer and songwriter, she's also a fashion icon, so when adidas announced that they were signing her for a multi-layered deal a few days ago, the entire world was brought to a halt.
Music, art, fashion, sneakers - all these industries, and more, were shocked by this massive announcement. But if for whatever reason you don't think this is a big deal, here's exactly why the Beyoncé x adidas collaboration is so important. Back in November, Beyoncé bought out her IVY PARK brand from TOPSHOP amidst British retail tycoon Sir Philip Green's sexual harassment allegations. For her Three Stripes collab, she will be launching it under this brand which is absolutely huge news especially in the #MeToo era. This move proves that even after an incident like this, brands, as well as people, can move on and become a better versions of themselves, and while the scars may still be there, the good will always prevail.
The Beyoncé x adidas collab is also extremely empowering not only for women, but for women of colour. A partnership that is comparable to Virgil Abloh's appointment as Artistic Director of men's wear at Louis Vuitton last year, the industry, to this day, isn't diverse enough. To add to this, Bey, unlike certain others we won't mention, is truly self-made. Born in 1981 to a hairdresser and a printer salesman, she's now one of America's richest self-made women according to Forbes. This is very inspirational especially to girls and boys with impoverished backgrounds.
Since the news was first unveiled at the start of April, many were pretty surprised that Bey didn't sign with PUMA like her husband, Jay-Z. Additionally, according to ESPN's Nick DePaula, she was actually approached by Reebok for this collab but she turned it down due to the brand's lack of diversity. Whether this is true remains to be seen, but both these instances show how important individuality and identity is - something that we can all learn from.
Set to release very soon, not only will the the Beyoncé x adidas collaboration deliver a new range of sneakers and apparel for women, it will also bring together communities and creativity, putting a major focus on women in leadership, shared ownership, empowerment and collaborations. Aiming to inspire the next generation of creatives, the collection promises to deliver inclusion and boundary breaking sportswear that steps outside the stereotypes of athleisure apparel.
A collaboration that's going to completely disrupt the industry, we're beyond hyped to see what Beyoncé and adidas will be dropping in the coming months! Keep it locked at The Sole Supplier for more updates as it develops, and let us know what your thoughts are on this partnership! While you're here, take a look at the full adidas sneaker range!
