Let’s be honest, not every Air Jordan 11 is made equal. Some bring back memories of MJ on the hardwood. Others? Well, they remind you of the time you nearly cried in Nando’s because someone else copped the pair you missed out on.
Enter the Air Jordan 11 “Gamma Blue.” First released in 2013, this blacked-out, patent-leather beast is finally making its return on December 13, 2025 and for many of us, it’s more than just another retro.
Back in 2013, not everyone was sold. The OG crowd had their eyebrows firmly raised as the black midsole was a big no-no for some purists. Similar to how Nike executives dismissed the darkened Air Max 95 midsole, this was a colourway that challenged tradition. But that was sort of the point.
The “Gamma Blue” wasn’t about nostalgia, it was about pushing the AJ11 into new territory. With its sleek black upper, ice-blue outsole, and bright hits of varsity maize and teal, it looked less like court-wear and more like formalwear for sneakerheads. Weddings, graduations, prom nights - the patent leather and stealthy tones made it a go-to for “dressy” occasions. Think of it as the unofficial start of the “Jordan-as-suit-shoe” movement, a trend that fully manifested in 2018’s “Cap and Gown” 11s.
Comfort-wise, the full-length Air-Sole and carbon fibre plate remain intact, but don’t expect ultra-plush Pegasus Premium softness, AJ11s are known for their support and structure, not squish. True to size is the general rule, unless you’ve got extra-wide feet.
To some, it’s just another holiday release. But to me? The Gamma Blues were my white whale.
I was 16 when they first dropped. I remember clocking them on Instagram, grabbing the train up to Nike Town London to see if they’d be stocked. “We’re not getting those,” the staff told me. My heart sank. Days later, a guy sat across from me in Nando’s flexed his pair casually: “Got ’em from the Size? drop.” I could’ve cried into my peri-peri chips. Luckily my mango and lime butterfly was enough to quell my sadness.
Facebook groups lit up with resellers asking for £200 plus, way out of my teenage budget. So I settled for scrolling past heavily filtered photos on my iPhone 4S, rocking my battered Nike SB Koston 2s instead.
That £130 retail felt steep back then but fast forward 12 years, adjust for inflation, and £185 feels oddly poetic. Like a chance to finally settle the score.
The Gamma 11s might not be as iconic as the “Concords” or “Space Jams,” but among non-OG colourways, they’ve quietly built a cult following.
In terms of styling? We reckon just keep it simple. A darker denim, clean hoodie and maybe a splash of blue or yellow to mirror the accents. Let the shoes do the shouting.
Like Rich Paul said on the Complex Sneakers Podcast, "If you busy up top, you simple at the bottom". While the "Gamma Blue" AJ11 is a mostly-black shoe, the patent leather does deem it a statement piece for some, so just bear that in mind when you're trying to get a 'fit off.
The “Gamma Blue” isn’t trying to be a classic. It never was. It’s bold, unconventional, and to some, a bit of an outsider in the AJ11 family. But that’s what makes it special.
