Zara’s doing some very interesting moves at the moment. Just a week after announcing that former Dior and Maison Margiela creative director John Galliano will be joining Zara as artistic director, the Spanish fast-fashion label has teased a new collaboration with New York-based designer Willy Chavarria. The collection, titled “Vatísimo”, will be featuring clothing, jewellery and accessories across menswear and womenswear.

“This collaboration is truly a way for me to share the elevated aspects of the brand vision with a wider and more democratic audience,” Chavarria told Vogue about the upcoming linkup.
“I had a fantasy of a mansion in Mexico City where a family with many dramatic issues lived. I was looking at American television drama series from the 1980s like Dallas and Dynasty mixed with the Mexican telenovelas I grew up with my grandmother watching,” he added. “Incredibly chic and dramatic to the point of humour.” The campaign features legendary model Christy Turlington in this soap opera setup.
The collab leans into the designer’s signature silhouettes of oversized fits and structured tailoring in wide-legged pleated trousers, jackets, denims, pencil skirts, pussybow-style shirts, long shorts, graphic T-shirts with the Willy Chavarria logo and “Nueva York” in a gothic typeface, as well as jewellery and accessories.
This is an intriguing move by Zara – this new collab is following the footsteps of H&M, which is known for its designer collaborations (such as Maison Margiela and Simone Rocha) through the years, and with John Galliano at the helm, it’s safe to assume that Zara will be coming out with more exciting drops.
This is also not the first time Chavarria has collaborated with another brand. The designer has been booked and busy with his ongoing collaboration with adidas – the newest capsule collection shown at Paris Fashion Week last month.
Willy Chavarria x Zara will drop at zara.com and in-stores on March 26th.
