Earlier in 2023, adidas launched its inaugural adidas Consortium Cup, a four-week-long sneaker design tournament starring 16 footwear retailers all over the globe. Each round was intense as they battled it out in a single-elimination matchup via fan-voting on CONFIRMED. Whilst London-based Offspring won the tournament, several sneaker stores will launch their reinterpreted adidas Samba iterations to the public in late 2023. One of the tournament favourites in the first round, New York’s Extra Butter Samba “Green Chalk White”, presents a fresh, modern-day update to the legendary terrace trainer.
Founded in 2007, Extra Butter gained prominence in the streetwear and sneaker scene thanks to its wealth of knowledge combining film, fashion, and culture. Within 15 years, this progressive independent lifestyle brand from Manhattan headlined several sneaker collaborations, including a Happy Gilmore-inspired golf capsule with adidas. In the adidas Consortium Cup, Extra Butter went as far as the semifinals against fellow UK retailer END. This adidas Samba remake flaunts a muted green suede base with a fuzzy T-toe overlay in a darker green hue. Intricate stitching forms the adidas 3-Stripes on the lateral sides, while teal 3-Stripes adorn the medial panel. An embroidered sunny Extra Butter patch sits on the lateral rear for added flair. The laces flaunt a cream white tone, complementing the yellow tongue, lining, and leather heel tab. Classic adidas Trefoil motifs deliver an old-school look to the Adi Dassler masterpiece. The signature dark gum rubber sole completes the unique design of this Consortium Cup entry.
