Up There x New Balance 2002R Backyard Legends 2 Red

Returning with what might read at first like a sequel to a mega-blockbuster movie, Up There’s “Backyard Legends II – The Legend Continues” keeps things fun with its second take on the New Balance 2002R. The Australian-based retailer sure knows where to look for niche storytelling as they head towards the theme of barbeque-based cricket legends once again.

The New Balance’s 990v3 Made in USA tongue makes its way onto the 2002R in all its silver mesh and red-lettered glory, swapping out the usual “USA” for “AUS” instead. While we’re pretty sure these weren’t hand-crafted in Oz, we can be sure the great storytelling behind the pair was born in the land down under. Nothing says, “I could have played professionally if …”, like a sports shoe with highlighted tech features, a symbol of their could-have-been sports stardom status. The people at Up There know this all too well, taking to the ABZORB heel unit in a bright red, really emphasising the cutting-edge tech on the 2002Rs. Pushing the sporty aesthetic are the thick white laces that instantly remind you of white tube socks and inexplicably large calves that these Backyard Legends seem to behold. The Wolverine suede on the tip and neon hits mix perfectly with a few dashes of New Balance grey, really giving the shoe a unique edge that attracts the eye.
