Rainier Mountaineering, Inc. co-founder, Lou Whittaker, nearly lost his toes in 1975 while descending K2, a mountain between Pakistan and Xinjiang, China. After that unfortunate incident, he approached Ed Norton and Jim Davis of New Balance to create a lightweight boot for him. Thus, the Rainier sneaker boot was born in 1982. Whittaker successfully scaled and descended Mt. Everest in 1982 and 1984. Get ready for one of the latest Rainier releases, the New Balance Rainier “Dark Earth Blue”.
This Rainier has a cobalt blue Cordura ripstop nylon base. The padded collar underlay is dark grey with black suede trim. The hairy suede overlays that wrap around the toe cap, mudguard, mid-panels and heel counter are chocolate brown. The flat laces are also chocolate brown with D-ring metallic eyelets that look like the same ones on hiking boots. A black sole unit with a Vibram rubber outsole rounds out the style of this shoe.
