Over the years Reebok has birthed some of the most iconic basketball sneakers of all time, with the Reebok Kamikaze being one of the most recognisable and prolific of the bunch. As Shawn Kemp of the Seattle Supresonic’s first ever signature sneaker, the silhouette also holds plenty of historical value, although news just in is that the model is now getting a name change due to the fact the name references Japanese WWII suicide pilots, which some people may find offensive.
The brand has now announced that they’re officially changing the name of the sneaker to the “Hurikaze” instead, with Reebok’s VP of global apparel stating We have a responsibility to be accountable, learn and grow as a brand, and although we can’t change the past we can most definitely impact change for our future, by making this change we signal growth and acknowledge the impact words have on the those we serve within our diverse global sneaker community.” The name change should start from now onwards, so look out for Hurikazes on shelves soon.
