Whilst Ye may have been keeping out of the spotlight over the past couple of months, that doesn’t mean he hasn’t stopped working hard behind the scenes. Not only will the Yeezy team be gearing up for Yeezy Day next month, but the rapper also recently announced that Yeezy designer Steven Smith would be set to head up a new project: Donda Industrial Design. Now, it looks like there could be even more Ye on the way, as his legal team appears to have filed a patent that suggests Yeezy retail stores could be coming soon.
According to TMZ, the trademark filings indicate that Ye could be set to expand YZYSPLY from “online ordering services” to physical “retail store services” and “retail stores”. They also imply that Ye could be looking to broaden the YZYSPLY product offering, with the filing including a number of clothing items and accessories, ranging from underwear to t-shirts, as well as accessories such as headwear and of course, footwear.
Of course, patent and trademark filings don’t always mean that brands are going to move in that direction – sometimes they’re just made to prevent other people from infringing on the name. However, judging by Ye’s latest business moves, we wouldn’t be surprised to see him move into the world of bricks and mortar, especially if he can add some kind of experiential element to the stores. Again, the YZYSPLY name, merchandising plans, and move do throw into question Ye’s future with adidas, but until anything official is announced, we can only wait and see what happens.
