UPDATE: Nike is serving up pure nostalgia with this latest Yu-Gi-Oh! collaboration. They’ve teamed up with Yu-Gi-Oh! in a crossover that blends anime culture with sneaker game prestige, and the star of the show is none other than the Air Max 95 QS YGO.
This isn’t just a retro. This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Air Max 95, and Nike is celebrating by bringing to life one of the most legendary Easter eggs in anime history — Joey Wheeler’s “Air Muscle” kicks from the original show (Duel 8: ‘The Poison Man’ or Volume 2 if you read the Manga). Back in the late 90s, eagle-eyed fans clocked that Joey’s shoes looked suspiciously like AM95s, but with a name change for copyright reasons. Now more than two decades later, the fictional sneaker is stepping out of the TV screen and onto pavements worldwide.
“At Nike, we believe the future of sport is creative and unlimited in possibility, and we know that athletes draw inspiration from extraordinary sources in the video games they play and the anime they watch,” says Dave Vericker, Nike’s Senior Director of NBHD/Energy Merchandising. “Through our partnership with KONAMI, we wanted to show love to longtime fans and inspire the next generation by bringing a beloved mythical story to life through design.”
Uniting Gaming culture and streetwear once again is Nike DOT.SWOOSH, a subdivision that now focuses on the brand’s connection between the real and virtual world. Currently there has been no indication that .SWOOSH members will be receiving early access to the YGO x Nike collaboration but we will let you know if that changes.
We’re getting two colourways, each dripping with Yu-Gi-Oh! lore:
•The “Joey” Colourway – A global release awash in Psychic Blue, Mystic Navy, Stone Blue and Volt. Panelling, lace loops, and even a hidden lateral forefoot Air unit reflect the original anime art. Scratch-mark textures nod to Joey’s kicks in the show, a Yu-Gi-Oh! logo sits proudly on the outsole, and the sockliner features Joey, his Red-Eyes Black Dragon, and a symbol of friendship. Sparing no detail, the front Air unit has been blacked-out to mimic the original comic book version.
•The “Jonouchi” Colourway – A Japan exclusive in White, Wolf Grey, Dark Smoke Grey and Cool Grey, paying tribute to Yu-Gi-Oh!’s manga roots. Same meticulous detailing, but a monochrome palette that’s pure understated flex.
Jennifer Coleman, VP of Licensing & Marketing at Konami Cross Media NY, adds: “The passion, care and attention to detail Nike brought to this collaboration has been extraordinary. Their unique vision of Yu-Gi-Oh! characters and fans as athletes will redefine how our audience connects with their favourite characters, especially Joey Wheeler.”
The footwear is joined by a capsule collection that’s part streetwear, part duel-ready uniform:
•Domino High School Destroyer Jacket – A varsity-style piece reimagined as a competitive duelling team jacket. Heavyweight wool body, premium leather sleeves, quilted satin lining, chenille patches and 3D embroidery make this one for the collectors.
•Heavyweight Tees – Available in black or white, loose fit, with co-branded front graphics and a full-size Red-Eyes Black Dragon print across the back.
Both sneakers come in exclusive packaging containing official, playable Nike x Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game cards - the first time KONAMI has co-created TCG cards with a sneaker brand. For collectors, this could be grail-level stuff. The cards are not just for looks either, as you can play them within the Yu-Gi-Ho playing card universe.
It looks like buyers will recieve the "Winds of Victory" holographic Spell Card with the Globally availabe "Joey" edition, while the Japan-exclusive "Jonouchi" colourway will get the "毒サソリの食" Trap Card which translates to "Poisonus Scorpion's Feast". This of course is a reference to 'The Posion Man' character from the Manga who sells the Air Muscle to Jonouchi.
Circle it: Friday 12th of September 2025. The “Joey” colourway and most apparel will drop globally on Nike SNKRS and through select retailers. The “Jonouchi” will remain a Japan-only release, hitting local spots the same day. Prices land around £185-£190 for sneakers, £190 for the Destroyer jacket, and £30 for the tees.
Nike’s launch campaign is going big too, including the likes of cinematic trailers featuring the original Japanese and English Yu-Gi-Oh! voice actors, tapping into Joey’s underdog story.
Joey Wheeler wasn’t supposed to win. He didn’t have the rare cards or the fancy reputation - but he had grit, his friends, and the freshest shoes in the game. Now, Nike has immortalised that underdog spirit in sneaker form.
For sneakerheads, this is a rare link between anime and authentic sneaker history. For Yu-Gi-Oh! fans, it’s the ultimate full-circle moment, giving them a chance to finally hold the real Air Muscle in real life. Whether you’re copping for the flex, the nostalgia, or to channel your inner duellist, this drop is primed to be a legendary addition to both your rotation and your collection.
