The gap between formal shoes and sneakers is quickly disappearing, giving rise to a new wave of hybrid footwear. What once seemed outlandish; like the “snoafers” (sneaker loafers); has now become one of the biggest trends to watch out for. Other formal styles are reimaging some iconic silhouettes by pretty much all of the leading sneaker brands out there.
This fusion of formal with casual functionality is gaining momentum, with brands bringing fresh twists to classic styles.
Leading the charge are sneaker loafers, a design innovation that began turning heads last summer. New Balance, in collaboration with Junya Watanabe, introduced the 1906L; a bold combination of a breathable mesh upper with classic penny loafer detailing, all sitting atop a running shoe sole. Initially, the idea of pairing timeless loafers with athletic soles sparked mixed reactions, especially from the fashion community. To ease sceptics, the brand launched these hybrids in simple black and white colourways, making them approachable for first time adopters.
Despite the initial hesitation, the sneaker loafers gained popularity. As demand grew, brands began experimenting with bolder, harder to style colour options. Soon, other companies joined the trend. G.H. Bass, a heritage leather footwear brand, introduced a version with a full leather and suede upper paired with a running sole. Hoka put a rugged, hiking spin on the hybrid, while Vans leaned into athletic inspired designs. It’s clear that sneaker loafers are here to stay and will be one of this summer’s standout trends.
Another bold hybrid is making waves this season: the Mary Jane sneaker. This style takes the classic Mary Jane; a shoe with a T bar strap historically rooted in formal wear; and reimagines it as a unisex, streetwear ready silhouette. Beyond mixing formal and casual, this trend also taps into the “girlification” movement, bringing a touch of playful femininity to everyone’s wardrobe.
The Mary Jane gets its name from the early 1900s comic strip Buster Brown, where the character Mary Jane wore the classic T bar shoes. In 1904, the Brown Shoe Company named its own bar shoes after her, cementing the style’s legacy. Over time, Mary Janes evolved from practical footwear to a fashion statement, rising to fame in the 1960s Mod era with bold designs by Yves Saint Laurent. In the ‘90s, chunky soled Mary Janes made a comeback, embraced by goths, punks, and grunge fans.
Today, sneaker brands are breathing new life into this classic style. From adidas Sambas to UGG’s chunky Bea Mary Jane and the AMBUSH x UGG collaboration, the Mary Jane sneaker is emerging as a summer must have. Moreover, similar to the Mary Jane sneakers, PUMA took its iconic Speedcat silhouette, gave it a ballerina makeover, and dressed it in cheerful colours.
The rise of hybrid sneakers reflects a larger trend in the footwear industry: blending traditional styles with modern comfort to bridge the gap between casual and formal wear. This approach makes hybrid sneakers versatile enough for both everyday use and special occasions. By incorporating feminine silhouettes, brands are expanding their footprint and appealing to a wider, unisex audience.
We're also seeing formal sneakers constructed with premium materials gaining traction. Take, for example, the office ready Dover Street Market x Brain Dead x adidas Bowling Shoes or the New Balance Allerdale “Made in UK,” crafted from luxurious dark brown leather. Could premium sneakers be the third big trend to watch out for?
One thing's for certain: this season, hybrid sneakers are taking over, with styles that redefine how we think about footwear. Whether you’re drawn to the office ready sneaker loafers, the feminine Mary Janes, or luxe premium designs, there’s a hybrid for everyone. Which of these silhouettes will make it into your Spring/Summer rotation?
