Ah, the humble UGG boot. Possibly one of the most recognisable brands within the footwear scene, UGG has managed to reinvent itself time and time again. From early beginnings on the beaches of California to their shaky time as a mid-'00s status symbol, UGG styles rose through the footwear rankings to become absolute must-have products last year, with some models even doubling in value on the resale market.
Originally designed by an Australian surfer, the UGG boot quickly transcended the sandy beaches it was born on and found favour with the apres-ski crew, before the cosy style got its first taste of pop culture fame on the feet of Pamela Anderson in 1994. Fast forward just a couple more years, and the UGG brand became a household name courtesy of Oprah, before quickly becoming a product of the time thanks to cosigns by Paris Hilton and the Gossip Girl crew. While UGG moved further into pastel hues and Juicy Couture territory, more and more counterfeit models sprung up, and by 2009, the brand has slipped out of the spotlight, focusing on its die-hard fans and cementing itself as a luxury lifestyle brand - albeit ditching the bright colours.
Now, UGG is back, and it's back in a big way. Its new range of styles - from the Ultra Mini Boot to the UGG Tasman Mule has been designed for the modern era, with soft living and luxurious comfort at the forefront of the mind. Some things don’t change of course - it still has its hoards of celebrity fans - but if you’re looking to get back into the UGG movement there are a few things you should know first. From sizing to comfort (you’ll want to know whether UGGs fit true to size, or if you should size up or down in UGGs), to who’s been spotted in them and which styles you should be buying, read on for everything you need to know before buying your new pair of UGGs.
UGG styles fit true to size. You should take your usual size in UGGs.
For those of you in a rush to purchase, then put simply, UGG footwear runs true to size: there’s no need to size up or down. That being said, if you’re buying a classic pair of UGG boots, it’s worth bearing in mind that these will feel tight at first, but over time the sheepskin lining will mould to the shape of your feet.
Your UGGs should feel firm and snug. They shouldn’t slip at the heel, and you definitely shouldn’t have curled toes, either. Because they will stretch out over time, there is no need to size up in UGGs.
You’d be hard-pressed trying to find a more comfortable pair of boots or slippers. Often lined with soft sheepskin, there’s no doubt that the furry insoles make for an extremely comfortable on-foot experience. They're so warm, too!
Because you’re supposed to sink into their soft lining, you probably won’t notice any height gain with a pair of UGGs, but that being said, there are plenty of platform versions available now if you are looking for a boost!
UGG uses the best materials for their products, including grade-A sheepskin and premium leather, meaning that you need to take extra care to keep your UGG items looking fresh. While caring for your UGGs may seem like a daunting task, let us reassure you that it’s actually much easier than you think. UGG’s classic styles are water-resistant, which means they’re made from pretreated suede that has been designed to withstand occasional rain or snow, but you can also buy an UGG Protector spray to proof them further. All you have to do is spray your UGGs with the protector spray (until they’re wet but not soaked) and then leave them to dry for 24 hours before brushing the suede back into place. You can see that we’ve put the spray to the test right here, so check out the video to see how well it works!
Styling UGGs in 2024 is very different to how Paris Hilton and co wore them back in the early 90s, and no matter how iconic Pammy’s red swimsuit look was, we wouldn’t necessarily recommend that either. The good news though, is that UGGs are much easier to style than they look - and we even have a whole guide for learning how to style them.
In short, UGGs will actually work with most things. We love an Ultra Mini boot paired with cosy socks and leggings for an athleisure vibe, but the same style (or the Tasman Mule) would look just as good with a straight-leg or wider-fitting pair of jeans, too. You could even take a leaf out of Bella Hadid’s book and style them with a skirt to see you through the more transitional months: UGGs aren’t just for winter you know!
There's never been a better time to get your hands on a pair of UGGs and there's now more styles than ever to choose from! While classics like the Tazz and Ultra Mini offer a classic style in a range of colourways, there are also some new styles like the UGG Lowmel trainer or the Pumped Slide which can help add some variety to your footwear rotation.
If you’re looking to cop a specific model like the Tasman Slippers "Mushroom" or Tazz "Chestnut", you may find these styles are often sold out, so be sure to set your release reminders over on our UGG product pages and we'll give you instant alerts when they come back in your size.
If you’re still not sure which pairs to buy, here’s a quick guide to the styles that are the most popular right now.
The classic UGG boot in her most minimalist form - the UGG Ultra Mini is the perfect pair. It’s cosy enough to wear outside, yet small enough to even double up as a slipper if the trend ever does die down - plus it's now available in a platformed version, too.
Water repellent and stain resistant, the Ultra Mini is a great choice for the Fall/Winter season. We recommend getting your usual size if you're planning on adding this pair to your rotation.
Mules are trending, UGGs are trending - it’s only natural these should come together, right? Much like the Ultra Mini, this is a more subtle version of UGG boots past, only this time it features a lowered back, making it easier to slip on and off. This pair also comes in a platformed style (called the Tazz), just in case you fancy stomping around a little more.
The UGG Tasman and Tazz styles both fit true to size from our experience. The UGGplush lining found on these styles may mean you have a tight fit initially but over time as the shoes mould to your feet you'll get the perfect fit and incredible comfort. If you're between sizes and aren't sure whether to size up or down, we'd recommend sizing up as if you wear thick socks you might find the smaller size too tight.
We told you that UGGs weren’t just for winter, didn’t we? The sheepskin boot brand’s answer to the Birkenstock Arizona, the Goldenstar Clog is set to be the next big thing. Want to get your hands on a pair? You'll have to be quick - they won't stay in stock for long.
Offering a slingback heel, lightweight outsole and soft suede upper, the Goldenstar Clog is a great pick if you're in the market for a clog rather than a slipper.
If you can't quite get behind UGG's slip-on shoe covers, UGG does make a winter-ready version of its Tasman silhouette. Aptly named the UGG Tasman Weather Hybrid, this pair comes equipped with a rubber sole to help protect its suede uppers, as well as toggle fastenings for a more secure fit around the heel.
If you're not quite ready to swap out your sneakers just yet (or you don't wanna give up your UGGs) then don't panic, the UGG Lowmel will tick all your boxes. The latest sell-out silhouette from the brand, the Lowmel combines UGG's signature soft suede with mesh panels for a sportier look, while fluffy insoles keep things cozy.
A newer style to the brand's roster, the UGG Lowmel trainer has quickly became a hit as it combines the comfort and luxury of UGG boots with the versatility and durability of a classic trainer.
