Yohji Yamamoto and adidas are no strangers to experimental footwear when it comes to its Y-3 branch. The Idoso Boost mixes tradition with all that is modern, a language that the division is known for exploring. Yamamoto looks to adidas performance technology with this release, channelling the climbing shoe silhouette in an avant-garde fashion. This shoe is truly a breath of fresh air in a market that is full of retros and standard EVA midsoles.
The majority of the woven nylon upper stays in line with Y-3’s binary colour blocking, however, a silvery grey does feature on the elongated eyestays that form the 3-Stripe branding. Leather eyestay accents add weight to the design with its premium quality, helping lock down the asymmetrical lacing system. The most unorthodox detail on the shoe is the BOOST heel cushioning which is coated in a semi-translucent plastic and features a large Y-3 logo. This splits what could have been considered a ‘normal midsole’, providing the shoe with the performance edge that it sought inspiration from. Raising the midsole a fraction and creating a further divide between the heel-to-toe portion, is a concept that adidas produced decades ago on its Tischtennis model, emphasising a forefoot stance. The Idoso BOOST looks to the past adidas catalogue in order to deliver a reimagined take on outdated performance features.
Combining tech and style through the Idoso BOOST, Yamamoto adds yet another noteworthy silhouette to the unconventional Y-3 roster. Find out how to grab a pair by checking out The Sole Supplier.
