Chicago-born designer and creative director Joe Freshgoods expands his collaborative portfolio with New Balance, featuring a trifecta of NB 990v4 iterations. The “1998” capsule takes design inspiration from the 1998 film “Belly”, the lone feature film by award-winning music video director and producer Hype Williams and starred hip-hop icons like Nas and DMX, among many others. The Joe Freshgoods New Balance 990v4 “Keisha Blue” references the blue lighting in several significant scenes in the crime drama film, illuminating the sneaker in its titular hue to create a sombre atmosphere.
Following the hugely limited New Balance 650 “Stuntman” collaboration, Joe Robinson, AKA Joe Freshgoods, closes the year with another NB joint project. This rendition sports a predominantly blue palette clad in a breathable mesh upper with buttery smooth pigskin suede overlays. The signature “N” logos on the sides appear in a darker pigment that stands out atop the base. Light blue laces juxtapose the dark backdrop, resembling the characters’ eyes illuminating in the nightclub. A Made in USA “ 990v4 ” flag emblem adorns the tongue, while the heel features additional NB logos and a “1998” inscribed at the topmost portion as a nod to the film. Embroidered JFG branding decorates the lateral rear sections of the shoe. The blacked-out ENCAP midsole and durable rubber outsole complete this eye-catching colourway.
