This vintage track running shoe joins the new Nike Supersonic collection paying homage to stereo and sound systems. The Nike Cortez came out in 1972 and was Nike’s first official track shoe. Its history dates back to the late 60s when Nike was still called Blue Ribbon Sports. Ahead of the 1968 Mexico Olympic Games, Nike co-founders Phil Knight and Bill Bowerman were still working for the Japanese brand Onitsuka Tiger. The brand wanted a new name for the Bill Bowerman-designed running shoe. They wanted to name it “Aztec” to honour Mexico. However, a rival brand already had a shoe called Azteca, so Phil and Bill went back to the drawing board. Their new idea? Name the shoe after the guy who led the colonisation of the Aztecs, Hernan Cortes. The Nike Cortez became an instant icon, and the debut of the Swoosh put the brand on the map.

This colourway features a sail white leather makeover with black accents on the Swoosh, collar, heel, and foam midsole. Supersonic logos resembling soundwaves adorn the heel and sockliner.
