New Balance 550 Black Hemp

New Balance’s great example of a revival, the 550, gets the ebony treatment and dons hemp material. First released in 1989, this silhouette faded into obscurity until Teddy Santis of Aimé Leon Dore stumbled upon it in 2018 and relaunched it as a collab in 2020. Today, This ‘90s-inspired chunky retro shoe is enjoying renewed popularity. Meet the New Balance 550 “Black Hemp”.

This NB 550 swaps out the usual leather upper with a black hemp material from heel to toe. The pillow-like convex “N” logos on the flanks stand out with a velvety finish and a pure white outline. White repeats on the embroidered “550” branding on the lateral mid-panels. Charcoal grey NB branding can be found on the black tongues whilst the white NB logo embellishes the insoles. A light grey sole unit caps off the whole ensemble.
