The New Balance 550 was an 80s Basketball shoe that was once brushed to the side thanks to its lacking audience. Luckily since its rebirth, the shoe has truly found itself a place within today’s footwear culture. This is in no part thanks to the creative designer of the Made in USA line, Teddy Santis, who stumbled across this forgotten silhouette in an old buyer’s catalogue. After an assortment of loud and colourful drops of the silhouette, this grey and off white pair tones it down for a laid-back approach to the NB 550.
Moving forward with all the usual panelling and details, the mostly off white upper remains true to the shoe’s Basketball background. The sidewall branding of the rounded New Balance “N” has been clad in grey, along with the model’s “550” number. Standard comfort is to be expected due to the presence of the usually padded collar and rubber outsole that has only seen minor updates since its first inception over thirty years ago. The mesh cut-out, which lies at the bottom of the laces, provides further flexion during the heel-to-toe transition as the synthetic leather on the upper is only so giving. These may not be as comfy as your 99X lines but they will certainly keep you feeling sturdy when laced up on your feet.
If you fancy grabbing this simple grey and off white version of the New Balance 550, make sure you’re tuned into The Sole Supplier to find out where to pick these up.
