Originally created as a running shoe, the New Balance 990 is part of the 99x series, along with the 991, 992 and 998. While all other models in the series are popular, the 990 is easily the sneaker that trumps the rest in terms of popularity. The New Balance 990v4 is without a doubt the most-loved variation of the 990 due to its clean design and dad shoe vibes. However, production of the v4 was stopped in 2019 with the 990v5 taking over as the current silhouette. The 990v6 is set for a 2022 release after being teased by Teddy Santis on Instagram.
The serious runner is made in the United States at New Balance's headquarters and comes in at a price tag of around £180, although prices may vary especially with collaborations. Classic colourways include the classic New Balance 990 Castlerock Grey, Navy and the Nimbus Cloud iteration.
The new pair showcases exaggerated design details with the label's signature N logo adorned on both sides, like most New Balance shoes. The uppers are usually crafted from high-quality suede, leather and mesh that runs down to the toe box, showing off the premium construction materials used by the brand. Additional branding is usually featured at the tongue, while the rest of the innovative technology lies underfoot. Famous 990 collaborations include those with Aime Leon Dore, Kith and Stussy.
The perfect combination of cushioning and EVA core foam is spread across the ENCAP midsoles and heel to make this new shoe ideal for stability and everyday wear, whether it's a long walk or a short trip round the block.
