When Virgil Abloh tapped the iconic ‘80s Dunk for his Off-White collaborations, he transformed the basketball-turned-skate shoe into a contemporary grail.
First teased on Virgil’s Instagram in 2018, his December 2019 trio (“University Red,” “Pine Green," “Gold Midnight") honoured OG colourways while pioneering Off-White signatures like the hang tag and neon laces. The 2020 “Air Rubber” capsule took more liberties, deconstructing the Dunk with P-6000 panelling, evolving the icon once again. But it was 2021’s 50-Dunk drop dubbed "The 50" that proved the Dunk's unmatched hype, crashing sites upon launch.
Today, sneakerheads eagerly await the late Virgil’s remaining Dunk visions, all of which are pre-approved by Nike and his wife Shannon Abloh to be released posthumously. Though gone too soon, Virgil's daring remixes remain a conduit for past and future, vintage and next-gen style.
